Introduction: OS/390 contains a component known as BatchPipes OS/390. BatchPipes OS/390 uses a concept borrowed from UNIX, which "pipes" data directly from one job step to another, without waiting for the completion of either step. This makes it possible to restructure the relationship of jobs and job steps which normally cascade data sets from one to the other. Such restructuring has been shown to dramatically shorten the elapsed time needed to complete what had previously been a single-threaded sequential process.

This course, which contains hands-on lab projects, will demonstrate how to restructure an existing batch job stream to make effective use of BatchPipes OS/390 to shorten elapsed run time. In addition, the student will learn how to deal with recovery and restart of failing jobs in a piped set of dependent jobs. This course will also cover the impact of BatchPipes OS/390 on job scheduling, performance tuning and capacity planning.

Audience: System and application programmers, technical support personnel and system planners whose system will be migrating to OS/390 and who wish to exploit BatchPipes OS/390.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify how BatchPipes OS/390 can shorten the elapsed time of a job
  • Describe the effects of BatchPipes OS/390 on existing job schedules
  • Describe the impact of BatchPipes OS/390 on existing batch recovery and restart
  • Describe how the various BatchPipes OS/390 filters can alter job step relationships
  • Modify a batch job stream to take advantage of BatchPipes OS/390

Prerequisites: The student must have experience coding JCL and a working knowledge of MVS.

Duration: This course is 2 days long.
