Introduction: This courses provides information used for planning and implementing the installation of DFSMShsm (Data Facility System Managed Storage hierarchical storage manager). This course describes the benefits to be gained from HSM and the steps required to obtain these benefits. It describes, in detail, HSM storage pools and the HSM commands and user exits used to control HSM. The course contains hands-on lab projects.

The course also teaches how to analyze an installation's current data and how to design and structure HSM storage strategies that most effectively meet the installation's needs. The course covers the impact of HSM on disaster recovery and the use of ABARS (Aggregate Backup and Recovery Support) to achieve an effective disaster recovery strategy.

Audience: This course is intended for systems programmers, DASD managers and support personnel responsible for planning or implementing the installation of DFSMShsm.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of JCL, MVS concepts, DASD concepts, and experience with TSO/ISPF.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • design effective HSM storage pools
  • code HSM commands to implement these pools
  • analyze an installation's current data to formulate an HSM strategy
  • implement availability and recovery procedures for HSM control data sets and user data sets
  • use HSM user exits to tailor HSM to meet the installation's requirements
  • identify planning criteria for use of HSM in a managed storage environment
  • develop an effective strategy for using ABARS for disaster recovery

Prerequisites: Knowledge of JCL, MVS concepts, DASD concepts, and experience with TSO/ISPF.

Duration: This course is 5 days long.
