Introduction: The MVS operating system provides the services necessary to run batched work which is not interactively connected to a human user. This form of work, known as a batch job, is created through use of MVS' Job Control Language (JCL). To fully exploit the capabilities of the MVS system, a user must become familiar with certain essential parts of the JCL language.

This course focuses on those parts of JCL which will satisfy most, if not all, of the needs of the normal MVS user. The course author, who has been using JCL for 25 years, asserts that the JCL discussed by this course has been sufficient for at least 95% of his needs over that period. By focusing on the essential JCL and leaving out the more exotic options, JCL can be easily learned by even the most inexperienced user.

Audience: Programmers, end-users, help-desk personnel, or operators who have a need to submit batch work in an MVS system or need to debug JCL for end-users.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Create valid JOB cards for their installation's environment
  • Create multi-step JOBs and conditionally execute steps bases on return codes
  • Create DD statements to create new tape or disk data sets
  • Create DD statements to access existing tape or disk data sets
  • Create catalogued JCL procedures
  • Override parameters and control statements in catalogued JCL procedures

Prerequisites: The student must have a working knowledge of computer fundamentals and MVS concepts. This requirement can be met by attending the MVS/ESA Concepts and Facilities course.

Duration: This course is 3 days long.
