Introduction: The OS/390 operating system is IBM's flagship offering for its mainframe processors. This course uses the OS/390 system to introduce the student to operating system principles. It covers, at the conceptual level, all the essential parts of the OS/390 system and discusses their interrelationships. It describes the myriad of services available to programs in the OS/390 environment. It also describes, in detail, the flow of work through the system.

Audience: All programmers, operations staff, programming and operations managers who are new to the OS/390 operating system.

Prerequisites: The student must have a working knowledge of data processing and programming fundamentals.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • identify the different components of OS/390 and describe their functions
  • describe the flow of a job through the OS/390 system
  • describe the structure of an address space
  • identify the functions for communicating between two or more address spaces
  • describe how OS/390 exploits large real and expanded storage

Duration: This course is 5 days long.
