Introduction: The OS/390 operating system is IBM's flagship offering for its largest mainframe processors. OS/390 is a complex system with many configuration choices that can impact the behavior and performance of the resulting system. This course examines those options and teaches how to make appropriate choices for your installation.

The course is based on the Custom Built Installation Process Offering (CBIPO), which simplifies the installation and initial tailoring process. Using the CBIPO documentation, the student will develop a plan for installing and customizing their own system.

Audience: All OS/390 system programmers and technical personnel who are responsible for installing or customizing an OS/390 operating system.

Prerequisites: The student must have a working knowledge of OS/390 fundamentals, have experience with SMP/E and with OS/390 JCL

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • develop an installation strategy for one or more OS/390 systems
  • define the I/O configuration with the Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD) dialog
  • customize SYS1.PARMLIB members to control IPL and startup options
  • customize JES2 parameters to control batch work flow in the system
  • size and allocate all necessary OS/390 data sets
  • plan a system installation based on CBIPO
  • plan and configure an ICF catalog structure
  • plan a console configuration and message routing controls
