Introduction: The performance of an MVS system is a time-critical concern. The MVS system programmer is placed in a position of responsibility for monitoring performance, based on their access to system-wide resource information. Tivoli's performance monitor, OMEGAMON for MVS, provides the facilities which allow real-time monitoring of critical system performance data. An observer who is trained in the fundamentals of performance and has use of a monitoring tool such as OMEGAMON can provide a significant service to the installation by recognizing performance problems as they arise.

This course is intended for MVS, OS/390 and z/OS systems programmers and other personnel who have a need to monitor system performance using OMEGAMON II for MVS.

Audience: Systems programmers, system operators or technical support personnel who have a need to create REXX procedures to automate system operations through OPS/MVS.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the difference between throughput and responsiveness
  • Describe the major functions of SRM
  • Use OMEGAMON II to identify MVS performance problems
  • Navigate through OMEGAMON II screens using the "point and shoot" interface
  • Recognize and identify performance bottlenecks using OMEGAMON II

Prerequisites: Knowledge of z/OS performance concepts and experience with the operation of some performance monitoring tool such as RMF or Mainview for MVS.

Duration: This course is 2 days long.
