Introduction: The z/OS system is the most recent step in the evolution of the MVS and OS/390 operating systems and is IBM's flagship offering for its largest mainframe processors. This course explores the changes to the OS/390 system that affect system operation in z/OS.

Because the z/OS operating system is based on architectural changes which are extensions of the System/390 hardware architecture, this course covers both the new features of the zSeries hardware and the new or enhanced components of the OS/390 operating system that make the z/OS system possible. Because of its orientation towards system operators, it focuses on the aspects of z/OS that affect parallel sysplex and console operations.

Audience: All computer operators and operations managers who are responsible for managing the z/OS operating system.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify the new features of the zSeries hardware architecture
  • Describe the potential impact of the Intelligent Resource Director on
  • Identify how msys for Operations automates Parallel Sysplex recovery
  • Describe the enhancements to existing OS/390 commands in z/OS
  • Identify the enhancements to the Hardware Management Console in z/series
  • Describe how system-managed duplexing affects sysplex recovery

Prerequisites: The student must have experience operating OS/390 or MVS/ESA and a basic understanding of System/390 architecture.

Duration: This course is 2 days long.
