Introduction: Programmers who support OS/390 need to be able to keep track of the large number of service system modifications and to determine that the conditions required for service or product installation exist. System Modification Program / Extended (SMP/E) makes that possible. By maintaining an inventory of the software that exists on a system and keeping track of the fixes and local modifications that have been applied, the system programmer can know at any time the state of the system.

This course teaches the student how to set up a Consolidated Software Inventory, how to code the statements to include service in the system, and how to create SMP/E-compatible local modifications. The student will be taught how to set up and follow a reliable maintenance strategy for an OS/390 system complex. No prior SMP or SMP/E experience is required.

Audience: This course is intended for systems programmers who will perform system or product maintenance in an OS/390 environment.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • create a Consolidated Software Inventory for an OS/390 complex
  • use the SMP/E dialog to perform product installation and service
  • analyze SMP/E error messages and resolve common problems
  • create local modifications that are SMP/E compatible
  • devise and implement a strategy for maintenance in an OS/390 complex

Prerequisites: A working knowledge of MVS JCL, experience with ISPF/PDF, familiarity with Access Method Services DEFINE CLUSTER and the following utilities: IEBCOPY, IEBUPDTE, SUPERZAP, the assembler and the linkage editor.

Duration: This course is 4 days long.
