Introduction: System Managed Storage (SMS), provided by DFSMS/MVS will have a significant impact on the way that installations manage and use data. This course provides an introduction to the functions and structures of SMS. This course describes the benefits to be gained from SMS and the steps required to obtain these benefits. It describes, in detail, SMS management classes, data classes, storage classes and storage groups. The impact on JCL, catalogs and Generation Data Groups is discussed at length.

The course also teaches the end user how to take advantage of the SMS capabilities by altering existing JCL. It also covers the impact of SMS on TSO and ISPF.

Audience: This course is intended for programmers, managers and end users of OS/390 systems who will be encountering SMS in the near future.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • list the advantages of system-managed storage
  • describe the purpose of the SMS storage classes and storage groups
  • code JCL statements that use the SMS class keywords
  • override data class parameters with DD statement keywords
  • use the promoted DD statement keywords in legitimate DD statements

Prerequisites: Knowledge of of JCL, OS/390 data management concepts and DASD concepts.
