Introduction: This course provides information used for planning and implementing the installation of DFSMS/MVS (Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem). This course describes the benefits to be gained from SMS and the steps required to obtain these benefits. It describes, in detail, SMS management classes, data classes, storage classes and storage groups. The impact on JCL, catalogs and Generation Data Groups is discussed at length.

The course also teaches how to analyze an installation's current data and how to design and structure those SMS class and group options that most effectively meet the installation's needs. Planning for the features of DFSMS that allow SMS control of tape datasets, Tape Mount Management and Removable Media Manager is covered. The course covers the use of ISMF for creating and managing SMS classes and groups. The ACS (Automatic Class Selection) language is studied to permit the design and development of installation-defined routines for SMS class selection based on data set names and types.

Audience: This course is intended for systems programmers, DASD managers and support personnel who are responsible for planning or implementing the installation of DFSMS/MVS.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Design effective SMS classes and storage groups
  • Code Automatic Class Selection routines to implement classes and groups
  • Analyze an installation's current data to determine group and class requirements
  • Use ISMF to manage an SMS managed complex
  • Design and implement a structure for SMS management of tape datasets

Prerequisites: Knowledge of JCL, OS/390 concepts, DASD concepts, experience with TSO/ISPF and the ICKDSF utility.

Duration: This course is 5 days long.
