Introduction: The OS/390 operating system maintains information on catalogued data sets in VSAM and ICF (Integrated Catalog Facility) catalogs. In addition, the VSAM access method provides services for all forms of data set manipulation. The Access Method Services utility (IDCAMS) provides the services necessary to create VSAM data sets and manipulate catalog contents.

This course is intended for users who will actively use Access Method Services from either the TSO or batch environment of MVS. It covers the JCL needed to invoke Access Method Services and complete details on the commands used to request it's utility services. In addition, it shows which utility services apply to non-VSAM data sets. To provide the student with a background in VSAM data structures, an overview of VSAM data organization is provided. This course has hands-on exercises, and access to TSO terminals will be required.

Audience: Programmers, end-users, help-desk personnel, or operators who have a need to access, create or manipulate VSAM data sets or catalogs in an OS/390 system.

Objectives:  On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Create VSAM data sets, alternate indices and paths
  • Catalog non-VSAM data sets and define generation data groups
  • Print the contents of VSAM and non-VSAM data sets
  • Make back-up copies of VSAM and non-VSAM data sets
  • Export and import VSAM data sets between systems
  • Print information from VSAM and ICF catalogs

Prerequisites: The student must have a working knowledge of computer fundamentals, MVS JCL and MVS concepts. These requirements can be met by attending the OS/390 Concepts and Facilities and JCL for End-Users courses.

Duration: This course is 4 days long.
